Tour of Grumello & Inferno
1st day. – arrive at h. 19.00 from the Hotel - zone Sondrio East – accommodation in room, dinner in a typical restaurant, over-night stay.
2nd day. – After breakfast leaving for the tour on the route: Sondrio, Montagna, Poggiridenti, Tresivio, Chiuro, Sondrio with lunch in a typical restaurant.
Distance of the route 25 km. Duration about 5 hours.
The route goes through the zone of the said "panoramica dei castelli" (panoramic view of the castles) that follows more or less the track of the antique "Via Valeriana", used since the Medieval times to avoid transit on the lower swampy valleys. Leaving from Sondrio to reach Montagna in Valtellina, residence of the famous castle Castel Grumello.A real castle (twin) “gemino”, as you don’t find very often come, constituted by two distinct sailors: one with military function and the other residential. Was founded in 1326 by Corrado de Piro ghibellino, whom opposed to the Guelph De Capitani. It was destructed by Grigioni when they invaded the region in the middle of 1500. It’s found in the splendid vine terraces in a sunny area even in mid winter. We continue on the panoramic road until we reach Poggiridenti. Pendolasco, thus historically called, it was a “court” inside the parish church of Tresivio, where it offers beautiful views dove of the lower valley and the visit of the “Chiesa Parrocchiale di San Fedele Martire” . The architectural style of the seventeenth- eighteenth-century, but even in the beginning of the thirteenth century a small roman church existed in this zone. North East of the parish San Fedele the tower “Torre di Pendolasco” rises, a late medieval solid construction, a square plant, which can be found in the locality Torricello. We re-take the circuit to arrive at Tresivio with its own prehistoric rupestrian inscription recordings on the Rupe “Quattro Rocce”,(four rock rupe), whose legend says to be native country of Shakespeare. A particularly happy position for the midday sun, which made it perfect for cultivation, and gave it the facility to defend itself from the fortified places which explains how the country has already been lived in during prehistoric age. The excursion ends with the visits of the wine hous Casa vinicola Nera founded in 1940 and the Rainoldi Company was founded in 1925 in Chiuro but not before a short trip across the picturesque historic centre of Ponte in Valtellina.
